Tassie Ham Radio Conference

Q: Will there be catering at the event?

Yes the event will be fully catered and your conference fee covers all food and drinks during the daytime event. Morning and afternoon teas on Saturday and morning tea on Sunday and lunches will be provided on both Saturday and Sunday. If you have dietary requirements – please specify when you book your ticket.

Please note this is a cash-less event. Squares are available during the event for credit card payments for raffle tickets and Foundation Licence Manuals.

Q: Can I just turn up to the event on Saturday or Sunday and buy a ticket?

No. We are not accepting walk-up on the day. This is due to catering and administration for event and bookings close on midnight Sunday 1st November 2026.

Q: Is there accommodation that most travellers stay at?

Q: Are there any official dinners/social gatherings before or after the event?

Yes! On Friday 6th of November we will be holding a social evening and BBQ at the REAST clubrooms located at the top of the Queens Domain from 5pm. You need to book if you are coming to the BBQ (https://events.humanitix.com/tassie-ham-e-con). Come hang out, check out our clubrooms and enjoy an evening of socialization before the event.

On Saturday & Sunday evenings there is no dinner or gathering booked. Please feel free to organize a small group and head down to Salamanca, Constitution Dock or the North Hobart areas where there are many pubs and restaurants available. Pre-booking a table is always preferred as it can get quite busy on weekends.

  • ALARA is organising a group dinner for YLs and partners on the Saturday evening, 7 November:
    • The dinner will be held at the Shamrock Hotel, corner of Liverpool and Harrington Streets in Hobart. This will be a convenient walk for those staying in the city, and there is street parking available.
    • A 6.30pm start will give time to get there from the Conference, which finishes at 5.00pm.
    • Food is between $20 and $40, so you can choose to your taste and budget, and pay on the night.
    • All YLs are welcome, whether members of ALARA or not, and please bring your OM/husband/partner as well.
    • Please let Jane VK7JN (janewelch77@gmail.com) know if you would like to join us, so we can make a booking for the right number of people. Jane is familiar with the venue so feel free to ask her if you have any questions about the dinner.

Q: What are the Pre-Conference and Post-Conference events about and how do I get involved?

Pre-Conference Events:

There are three pre-conference events – the Mystery History Radio Tour of Hobart, Tas Maritime Radio Tours and the BBQ on Friday 6th November 2026. If you are interested in these events then you need to book through – https://events.humanitix.com/tassie-ham-e-con.

1). The Mystery History Radio Tour of Hobart happens from ~1pm to 3:30pm participates jump on a bus at the Queens Domain Clubrooms and you are taken on a tour (with running commentary) around Hobart to some historic and hysteric radio related sights. We stop a few times along the way where you can explore the radio sites and sounds of Hobart. (Moderate amount of easy walking involved). There is a small (<$20) charge to cover the bus hire.

2). Once back at the Queens Domain Clubrooms and before the BBQ you can tour the Tas Marritime Radio Operations Centre and Museum. This is a free event.

3). From around 5:30pm there will be a Gourmet BBQ put on for conference attendees. You need to book for the BBQ and this can be done through – https://events.humanitix.com/tassie-ham-e-con.

Post-Conference Events:There are two post-conference events – from around 2pm to 4pm:

1). Summits on the Air (SOTA) Activation of VK7/SC-001 Mt Wellington (an easy 10 points) on HF and VHF. Make your way up to Mt Wellington and you will be greeted by Jim Semmens VK7JZ who will tell you all about SOTA and help you make the minimum 4 contacts to gain your 10 SOTA points from Mt Wellington. (WEATHER PERMITTING).

2). At the Queens Domain clubrooms we will have microwave gear from 23cm, 9cm, 6cm and 3cm and we will be using our passive reflector – Mt Wellington to make contacts with amateurs around Hobart and beyond.

Q: I’m new to amateur radio, so I’ve never been to one of these events. What is in it for me?

We understand there is quite a considerable interest from more recently licensed hams in attending this event. For this reason, we have chosen a balanced and broad array of topics including both technical and practical for the conference.

Thanks to our Gold Sponsors ICOM Australia there will be a display of rigs and some giveaways. The hosting club REAST is also sponsoring some giveaways during the event.
